Me gusta pensar que la música drone es como un océano, que puedes relajarte mirándolo y después de un tiempo aburrirte, o puedes bucear en él y descubrir un nuevo mundo donde perderte. Cruudeuces ha estado publicando alucinantes sonidos drone/noise desde hace tiempo, a través de algunos de sus difuntos sellos o auto editándolos, y, recientemente, a través de su impresionante sello Ghetto Naturalist Series. En respuesta a mi petición, los 36 minutos de "Dead Hand" son menos tranquilos y más orientados al ruido que otros de sus discos anteriores, con bajos subacuáticos, saturación en abundancia, electrónica crujiente, chillidos de viento, voces ralentizadas, todo lo cual te lleva a un mundo nuevo y fascinante. I like to think of drone music as an ocean, you can relax staring at it and after a while get bored, or you can dive into it and find a whole new world where get lost. Cruudeuces has been putting out amazing drone/noise sounds for quite a while, through some of his now defunct labels or self editing, and recently through his awesome Ghetto Naturalist Series label. In response to my request, the 36 min. long "Dead Hand" is less quiet and more noise oriented than other of his previous releases, with subaquatic basses, plenty saturation, crunchy electronics, wind squeals, slowed down voices, all of which takes you to a fascinating new world. Play it loud and dive in.

First Dreamcatcher recording since 2008, radio play that took place on june 2010. 23 plus minutes of intriguing experimental electronica, sinister synths, spluttering drum machines and echoes of Throbbing Gristle, all of which takes you to an amazing and pleasurable unconciousness state in each listening.

"I feel like I'm in a dark place musically today. The best thing I've heard all week is by the Swedish sludgecore legends Brainbombs and my first two reviews have imposed the combined effect of a debauched nightmare & the essence of a scary crumbling mental hospital on my psyche. The first act on this rather terrific split CD has been compared loosely to Throbbing Gristle & I can hear why. Juddering mangled retro-electronic weirdness, stealthily monged rhythms, deviant sounds, creepy lyrics, druggy bloopy atmospherics from the first lot. Frightful dark ambiance & sludgy, treacly apocalyptic sound-scapery from the other ones. It sounds a little like early V/VM (particularly the initial The Stranger & Caretaker gear before he got a better computer & imbued his music with his contempt for this beautiful isle). I love the decayed synth sounds & muffled industrialisms that leech horribly onto your mind. I ultimately feel like I'm on a the ghost of a rotting slave ship with a steaming drunk Daniel Lopatin as the black-toothed pirate whipping the groaning tatters of his disenfranchised skeletal crew. Barras (Au, Plonk Moist ...) with amplified trumpet and effects. La primera vez que escuché a Scissor Shock fue la cinta "Shrine To Salvaged Junk", que me pareció (y aún lo hace) una de las mejores cosas que he escuchado en el último año. Estaba tan emocionado con la cinta que propuse al hombre detrás de S.S., Adam, sacar algo en fNs, por lo que cuando declinó la oferta debido a asuntos relacionados con el cine que le tenían ocupados me quedé un poco decepcionado. Meses más tarde me escribió diciendo que quería hacerlo. Bien!. Y unos meses más tarde viene con la más fantástica mierda weird-free-rock. Con ecos de bandas clásicas como The Residentes y Captain Beefheart, "Psychic Existentialist" es un viaje asombrosamente extraño por los reinos de rock y sonidos electrónicos. 32 minutos de gloriosas guitarras afiladas, ritmos estrambóticos y maravillosos vetetuasaberqué sonidos. I first listened to Scissor Shock was to the "Shrine To Salvaged Junk" tape, which I thought (and still do) it's one of the best things I've listened to in the past year. I was so excited with that tape that I proposed S.S. main man Adam to do a release on fNs, so when he declined the offer due to film making issues that kept him busy I was a little bit bumped. Months later he emailed me saying he wanted to do it. Yes! And some more months later he comes up with the greatest weird-free-rock shit ever. With echoes of classic bands like The Residentes and Captain Beefheart, "Psychic Existentialist" is an awesomely strange voyage by the realms of rock and electronic sounds. 32 minutes of glorious edgy guitars, odd rhythms and marvellous whoknowswhat sounds. Scissor Shock is a project of Adam Cooley from Columbus, Indiana and releases music since 2003. The music on the album "Psychic Existentialist" can be described as Frank Zappa full speed forward. Thirteen songs, varying from extremely short (twenty-three seconds) to about nine minutes fill the album. The musician experiments a lot with guitar, voice, synthesizer, drummachine and more. It is a kind of free-jazz, rock with weirdo combinations and structures, humor and an excellent feeling of timing. For me this album is a great surprise!.- (JKH)

Hace unas semanas entró en erupción en Islandia el volcan Eyjafjalla, creando nubes de cenizas y provocando que la mayor parte de los aeropuertos de Europa cerraran, porque si los motores de los aviones atravesasen esas nubes de cenizas se quedarían sin oxígeno y se colapsarían. El maestro de las jams de sintes Andrew Coltrane recrea durante 47 minutos lo que podría ser el sonido de esos motores a 10.000 revoluciones por minuto, volando a 900 km/h y luchando por seguir funcionando mientras las cenizas tratan de asfixiarlos y colapsarlos. Vuelo de ruido crudo.

A few weeks ago in Iceland erupted the volcano Eyjafjall, creating clouds of ash and causing most of Europe's airports closed, because if the airplanes engines would fly through those clouds of ash, they'd run out oxygen and collapse. For 47 minutes, synthjammaster Andrew Coltrane recreates what might be the sound of the engines at 10,000 revolutions per minute, flying at 900 km/h and fighting for keep on running while the ashes try to suffocate and make them collapse. Harsh noise fly.

Expensive Shit is a band from Austin, Texas and consists of five members and a guest musician. They do not practice and play anywhere they want. A previous jam-session was already released by Not for Fun. The session exists of lots of feedback sounds which are created by guitars and far away in the background you can hear some drums. After a while there is more variety in sounds and the beats became stronger. On this record a lot of guitar noise and if you like it - just go for it in this 19 minutes long session.- (JKH)

Otro nueva formación integrada por Isa Christ (Underground Idiot) y Nathaniel Brennan (que también toca en el alucinante Cruudeuces). Grabado en un día a finales de noviembre de 2009, con violín, guitarra, sintetizador, clarinete, bajo, tocadiscos preparado y micrófonos de contacto. Esto me suena como un Big Band dentro de un confesionario de una catedral tocando sierras eléctricas, gaviotas cabreadas, motores viejos gordos y monjas rezando el rosario bajo una tormenta. Dura menos que una misa (26 minutos), pero si los curas lo utilizaran como música de fondo, o incluso como una banda sonora, la Biblia sería mucho más divertida. Amén.

Another new outfit comprising Isa Christ (Idiot Underground) and Nathaniel Brennan (which also plays as the amazing Cruudeuces). Recorded whithin a day late november 2009 with violin, guitar, synth, clarinet, bass, prepared turn table and contact mics. This sounds to me like a Big Band inside a confessional of a cathedral playing electric saws, angry seagulls, fat old engine motors and nuns saying one's rosary under a storm. It lasts less than a church service (26 minutes) but if pastors would use it as background music or even as a soundtrack, the Bible would be lots more fun. Amen.

Teeth Collection is Matt Reis's vehicle to spread his personal vision of electro-acustic, improv and noise, with a deep industrial background, and a "isolationism" ambient form. He uses for it masterfully theremin, various effects and feedback loops. The sounds divide in three tracks, lasting 36 minutes, which leaves you completetly disarmed, with the space around you expanding and making you wonder if the walls around you are real or just an illusion, and making you feel everything but isolated. Huge.

Since 2004 the prolific Fossils have created their own universe of sound along more than 100 CDRs, cassettes and vinyls, masterfully mixing noise, "musique concrete" and improvisation. "Global Seance" is less concrete and electronic music than previous recordings. David Payne and Steve Smith (along with Rob Michalchuk in some subjects) dive for 41 minutes in "lower-case" electro-acoustic improvisation, with crunchy guitars and electronics, drowning saxes, all muddy in a not so lo-fi sound as previous recordings but equally warm that allows to listen the fascinating parts of the whole.

ahno zwei es un dúo de trompeta y saxo amplificados y tratados electrónicamente, y en su primer CDR nos ofrecen 20 minutos de free noise al estilo Borbetomagus, pero más melódico, más inteligible, más crudo y más simple, donde implícitamente existe cierto orden o sentido. Aunque parece que este dislocamiento de vientos tiene como objetivo molestar, y hacer que te quites los auriculares, escarbando en la maraña sonora se pueden encontrar melodías, espasmos de música, de jazz primitivo que están encerrados, que quieren salir pero no pueden... pero para eso hay que sumergirse en un mar de acoples y ruidos extremos.

ahno zwei is a duo of amplified and electronically treated sax trumpet and sax, and their first CDR give us 20 minutes of free noise Borbetomagus style, but more melodic, more intelligible, cruder and simpler, where there is implicitly a certain order and meaning. Although it appears that this displacement of winds aims annoy, and make you take off your headphones, digging in the sound mess we find melodies, spasms of music, primitive jazz, that are locked, they want to leave but can not ... but for that you have to inmerse yourself into a sea of feedbacks and extreme noise.

A step further removed from the Naked City act of Au (itself a jazzier derivation of the Aupier dogpile), amplified brass duo Ahno Zwei submit ‘Stakr l’vond’ for Spanish label For Noise’s Sake. Hardly the solo biopsy of Greg Kelley, wherein the instrument is perversely dismantled and cataloged, this doubling of instruments in equally a squaring of the sonic dimensions, which sees these figurative blasts resonate and distort in trails of pollution. In actuality a lesser traveled means to Noise, the reverbed channels and throw-away melodies dialog a nice tension with the hard-wrought screams of feedback. This tension is exaggerated over the six tracks/20 minutes, where increasingly the instruments are separated from their effects through emergent harmonies. The status of the noise elements remain in limbo in the end, as the skronky image and staticky afterimage mostly realign in a wall of violent hyperventilation. Numbered to 40 copies, the labeled disc comes in an unusual, spiral-bound booklet with color insert and tab.

De Cincinnati, Ohio, vienen Hearts of Palm, un trio de improvisación al que en esta ocasión se une el prolífico C. Spenser Yeh al violín (Burning Star Core, Organs y otros, y ha colaborado con artistas y grupos experimentales y noise como Wasteland Jazz Unit, John Wiese, Paul Flaherty, Sick Llama, Aaron Dilloway...). Este es su cuarto CDR en diez años que llevan improvisando. En un solo tema de 31 minutos forman una amalgama sonora unas veces etérea y otras intensa, con sonidos electrónicos, violínes, sintes, pianos percusivos, instrumentos no identificados, y percusión libre al estilo de Harry Partch y Moondog. Añade a esto pasajes de ruido, de psicodelia libre, drones, voces sacadas de un templo budista, que te llevan por distintos escenarios y ambientes imaginarios, desde una jungla llena de monos esquizofrénicos a una red de alcantarillado de ciudad llena de ratas hippie tocando música improvisada libre. Échale imaginación y disfruta.

"Similar to the recent solo release of Ahno Zwei player Nicolash (released on FNS imprint Fater Disks) for its experiment with sonic field, ‘Earth Headed Heart’ by Cincinnati improv trio Hearts of Palm relishes in the open physicality of their method, as though they foremost play the space as opposed to make a sound. This immediacy translates surprisingly well, as the depth and separation of this high fidelity recording allows an easy placement of the sonic objects which litter the single, 30 minute track. Here joined by local institution C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) carving away on violin, the band play with a number of acoustically-mindful devices – some electronic, but mostly otherwise – to produce a cohesive, coherent, yet totally motley sound which writhes aerobically for the duration. Gongs clatter dutifully, throats drone, and radio reports tweak the air pressure in strands. With no harsh cop-outs and no evident stutters, this is a very impressive effort making the most of the improvisational methodology with a maximum of sonic things to get lost among. "An always welcome return from Cincinnati based experi-mentalists HOP who are here joined by C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) on violin. Unlike their previous recordings this is a solid 30 minute block of unadulterated improv. It's noisy, chaotic, anarchic and fun. HoP are very much of the Faustian school of improvising and build their music from hard edged shards of metallic scree. All good improvisation is introspective in that it is reliant on the participants being fully focussed on their part in the whole but HoP's brand doesn't promote introspection on the part of the listener, at least not in this listener. Instead it promotes big cheesy grins as one becomes gloriously ensnared in their multi-layered tangle of textures, instruments and sounds."

From Cincinnati, Ohio, come Hearts of Palm, an improv trio joined in this ocassion by prolific C. Spenser Yeh on violin (Burning Star Core, Organs and others, and has collaborated with experimental and noise artists and bands such a Wasteland Jazz Unit, John Wiese, Paul Flaherty, Sick Llama, Aaron Dilloway...). This is their forth CDR in ten years they've been improvising. In a single track lasting 31 minutes they form an amalgam sound sometimes intense and sometimes ethereal, with electronic sounds, violins, synths, percusive pianos, unidentified instruments, and Harry Partch and Moondog free percussion style. Add to this noise passages, free psychedelia, drones, Buddhist temple's voices, which take you through various imaginary scenarios and environments, from a jungle full of monkeys with schizophrenia to a city sewer full of hippie rats playing free music with leftovers. "Similar to the recent solo release of Ahno Zwei player Nicolash (released on FNS imprint Fater Disks) for its experiment with sonic field, ‘Earth Headed Heart’ by Cincinnati improv trio Hearts of Palm relishes in the open physicality of their method, as though they foremost play the space as opposed to make a sound. This immediacy translates surprisingly well, as the depth and separation of this high fidelity recording allows an easy placement of the sonic objects which litter the single, 30 minute track. Here joined by local institution C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) carving away on violin, the band play with a number of acoustically-mindful devices – some electronic, but mostly otherwise – to produce a cohesive, coherent, yet totally motley sound which writhes aerobically for the duration. Gongs clatter dutifully, throats drone, and radio reports tweak the air pressure in strands. With no harsh cop-outs and no evident stutters, this is a very impressive effort making the most of the improvisational methodology with a maximum of sonic things to get lost among. HoP are very much of the Faustian school of improvising and build their music from hard edged shards of metallic scree. Para los que no conozcan al grupo australiano xNoBBQx, es un buen comienzo saber que su música ha sido descrito como "hardcore vegetariano estricto tocado por monos estreñidos", y ligados a grupos y artistas como Harry Pussy, Henry Flynt, Mouthus y Xenakis, en lo que suena como improvisación ruidosa minimal libre primitiva, con sólo guitarra y batería, y un encantador sonido lo-fi. Han editado un puñado de CDRs, casetes y LPs, el más señalado editado por el legendario sello Siltbreeze, alcanzando mayor conocimiento. Este CDR se compone de dos temas de unos 17 minutos cada uno grabados en directo en Sydney durante 2006. El primer tema es una cruda toma de improvisación y ruido libre, en el que caben las estéticas hardcore y punk. El segundo tema empieza donde termina el primero, con un profundo uso del silencio, un continúo zumbido, un acorde repetitivo, y golpes de batería esporádicos, todo ello llevado al extremo. Intenso, impresionante, maravilloso.

For those who don't know about australian xNoBBQx band, it's a good start letting know that they're music has been described as "militant vegan hardcore played by constipated monkeys", and linked to bands and artists like Harry Pussy, Henry Flynt, Mouthus and Xenakis, what it sounds like primitive free minimalist noise improv played, with just a guitar and drums, with a charming lo-fi sound. They have released a bunch of CDRs, cassettes and LPs, the most notable released by the legendary label Siltbreeze, getting wider knowledge. This CDR comprises two tracks lasting each one 17 minutes recorded live in Sydney during 2006. First track is a raw take on free noise improv, in which fits hardcore and punk aesthetics. Second track starts where the first finish, with a deep use of silent, a continous buzz, a repetitive chord, and sporadic drum hits, everythingo taken to the extreme. Intense, breathtaking, marvelous.

bazvotni es el nuevo proyecto nicolash (pier, bura...) donde utiliza cómo únicos elementos la batería y la voz. "vrums" es su primer cdr, en el que, en poco más de 11 minutos, nos encontramos con 10 temas, el más largo de menos de dos minutos, donde se suceden cortas dosis de ruido como elemento, ruido como expresión. Sin electrónica, apenas sin efectos, sólamente una batería, unos micrófonos y una voz que lucha por expresarse en medio de un sonido lo-fi. Una voz que esquiva la tonalidad pero que entona cánticos primitivos, la banda sonora de los pintores de Altamira. Primitivismo en el concepto y la ejecución, ¿cantos a la lluvia? ¿cantos a la muerte? El límite entre música tradicional africana y el lo-fi, la mezcla entre el noise y el freejazz hecho por tahitianos en trance, porque ante todo bazvotni es libre. Filigranas polirrítmicas camufladas en procesados semianalógicos. Y todo sin producir dolor, con la impresión de estar escuchando algo hermoso, algo honesto, con el corazón y sobre todo con el estómago... su corta duración tiene un motivo: este cdr no ha nacido para complacerte, sino para comulgar con él, para entrar a formar parte de él.

bazvotni is the new project of nicolash (pier, bura...) in which he uses as only tools drums and voice. "vrums" is his first cdr, lasting 11 minutes in 10 tracks no longer than two minutes, where short shots of noise follow one another. Without electronics, hardly with effects, just drums, some mics and a voice that fights for express itself amidst a lo-fi sound. The voice avoids tonality but intones primitive chants, like a soundtrack for the Altamira's Caves painters. Primitivism in concept and execution, chants for rain? chants for death? The limit between african traditional music and lo-fi, a mixture of noise and free-jazz played by tahitians in trance, because primarily bazvotni is free. Polyrhythmic filigrees camouflaged in semianalogical processes. And everything without inflicting any pain, having the impression that you're listening to something beauty, honest, with the heart and the stomach... it's short duration has a reason: this cdr is not made for please, but to be in communion with it, to become part of it.

"Here's another offering from Madrid based For Noise's Sake, this time in the form of an eleven minute, ten track cruiser by a lad named Nicolash, who also plays in Pier. Stripping down his setup to only drums, mics and vocals, the thing is over before you get started, but it has a certain immediacy to it that's pretty hard to deny.
Talking about individual tracks feels a bit silly when the longest offering here is under two minutes and all of them are more or less constructed from the same material, but the whole romp has the kind of caveman, primitivist attitude and aesthetic of Foot Village or Black Pus, only with a tad looser, more cannibalistic, ballistic feel to it. All about total wreckage with this one, as wordless vocal utterances are huffed and puffed atop free rock/jazz drumming that glides between multi-angular African mishmash and complete numb-nuts brawl material. "Loueem Fv" might have a semblance of a beat for its minute, but its weirdly unconcerned in a kind of punk nihilist way that flies way beyond simplicity for simplicity's sake. Elsewhere the vocals are more central, as on "Neaneamem," where growls harken in clattering putters of cymbal tinkling and snare pulse while his hyper Jandek chants fuel a kind of sadomasochistic, hurts so bad it's good energy. Weird.
Like I said before though, the whole thing is eleven minutes long, and its brevity actually adds to the excitement--never stops moving at all. And the submerged, muffled production makes it sound even more like emissions from some deep cavernous wake, a small flame visible atop the bass drum. Surprisingly effective stuff"
